For the second year in a row, a delegation from NBS participated in the 59th annual meeting for Nobel Prize winners that was held in Lindau in Germany in late June 2009.
The conference this year was designated for Chemistry, and two NBS 12th graders - Wisam Haddad and Hanna Khalil - were invited to participate as part of the “young researchers” group in this conference. In addition, Dr. Ousama Moalem, NBS Principal and Physics teacher was personally invited by conference sponsor, Countess Sonja Bernadotte, to be a distinguished guest at the conference.
NBS is the only school in the world to be invited to participate in this event in which 22 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry shared, as well as more than 600 “young researchers” who hold Masters and Doctorates from 67 countries, including 3 scientists who won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 2008.
It is important to note that the distinguished guests in the conference included:
Jose Manuel Barroso - President of the European Commission
Prof. Peter Frankenberg - Minister for Science and Arts, Badrn-wurttenberg
Dr. Johannes Hahn - Austrian Minister for Science and Research
Dr. Wolfgang Huebisch - Minister for Science and Arts, Bavaria
Prof. Annette Schavan - German Federal Minister of Education and Research
Shri Kapil Sibal - Indian Minister of Human Resource Development
Prof. Gang Wan - Chinese Minister of Science and Technology
The reason that NBS received the invitation to this conference was the large number of prizes that its students received over the years in the international contest for Physics research called “The First Step to the Nobel Prize in Physics”; the school received 9 such prizes, most of which were under the instruction of Dr. Ousama Moalem.
The purpose of the conference was to expose the “young researchers” to the failures and successes that the Nobel Laureates dealt with, thus bringing them closer to one another and also presenting the huge research possibilities in Europe in general and in Germany in particular, as the research percentage of budgets in it is the highest compared to the gross national product.
The conference also included lectures given by the Nobel Laureates, as well as a few "young researchers", on the issue of the rise in the temperature of the earth and the water problem, including proposals in that regard, as well as the illnesses that result from it and the possible treatments to deal with it.
Hanna Khalil and Wisam Haddad met a few Nobel Laureates and heard the lectures that were given, along with the discussion seminars between the senior scientists and the "young researchers". They also participated in the social programs that were held during the conference to strengthen the relationships, including sailing to the Countess’ palace where the farewell party was held.
