Recognizing Everyone in School Community
is a Unique Creation, Make in the Image of God.
Written by: Hunter Lambeth, Young Life, Israel
We recognize that everyone in our school community is a unique creation, made in the image of God. Each person in the family community deserves to be cared for unconditionally and valued equally.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created them.
Who Am I? When you think of who you are and what you look like, what thoughts does that conjure in your mind? Do you think about all the flaws you see in that face in the mirror? Do feelings of inadequacy overcome you? Do you wonder what other people think about you? I confess those things are often what come first to my mind. And yet God's word is very clear. Man's being is derived from His image, and we are the only living creations to be endowed with that privilege.
It's interesting that the enemy's first attempt at drawing man away from God goes right to the heart of man's idea of who God has created him to be. He tempts Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden fruit by promising them they will "be like God" (Gen. 3:5). But the truth was, they had already been created to "be like God" in all the ways God had intended. In that moment of disobedience, something was broken between the Image Giver (God) and the image bearer (man). Because of what has been broken, man's propensity is to receive lies from the enemy about who he is instead of receiving the truth from God about who He is. And the world and our relationships suffer because of it.
The good news is that Jesus redeems this brokenness. Colossians 1 says "He is the visible image of the invisible God" and that "in him all things hold together". He is the perfect image-bearer of God. When we receive Jesus into our lives, the truth of who God created us to be is reinterpreted through Him. We step once again into our inheritance as God's image bearers, becoming ambassadors for Christ through whom His kingdom is reflected to the rest of the world.
The next time you pass by the mirror, may you have eyes to see who He made you to be!
Please pray that the Lord strengthens the believing students at the school so that they would be a light before the others as well as a blessing to them.
