We Believe that Grace and Love are to be our Guiding Principles
Written by: Clay Smith, Pastor of Global Missions & Evangelism, Shandon BC, Columbia, SC

Value:

We believe that grace and love are to be our guiding principles

Reference:

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Romans 12:9-10 NIV

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. In love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in honor preferring one another;
Romans 12:9-10 ASV

Reflection:

The emphasis here is on the attitude of those that seek to exercise their spiritual gifts. After all, it is possible to use a spiritual gift in an unspiritual way. Paul says somethng similar in 1 Corinthians 13 saying that while one may speak in tongues of angels, possess all spiritual knowledge and even deliver their body unto death; if that person does not have genuine love, those actions profit him nothing. To "love without hypocrisy" speaks of a genuine desire for the good of someone else. Jesus spoke often of the outside of the cup without taking care of the dirt on the inside. From Jesus' point of view, true spiritual life change flows from the inside out.

The Christian life is one dedicated to loving both God and neighbor. This is why Paul says so much in this chapter about the outflow of a life dedicated to genuine love for one another. First of all, this kind of person must hate what is evil and cling to what is good. We glue ourselves to that which builds one another up and encourages one another to joy in the Lord. Moreover, we are instructed to devote ourselves to brother love. Nowhere else on the planet do you see a community of faith, hope and love from people of various racial, religious and socieconomic backgrounds as you should see in the body of Christ; a people devoted to serving and loving one another. Finally, we are to be people who prefer one another. In other words, we are thrilled to serve people in ways that make them feel more important than us. We count it an honor to model the life of Jesus Christ who though being God, took on the form of a servant and "...humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Phil. 2:8).

Prayer:

Please pray for our teachers who love and respect us and also teach us about Jesus.
