We are Called to Serve

Written by: Norm Edwards, FON Council Member and Fundraising Consultant

We are called to serve.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness, come before him with joyful songs. Know that the lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name for the Lord is good and His love endures forever. His faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalm 100

When I was a kid, my mother gave us a list of Saturday morning "chores," that we had to complete before we could go out and play. Chores were not fun. Neither my brother nor I had a very joyful attitude about performing them, but there was no way getting around it. The sooner we could get every task scratched off, the sooner we could begin having fun.

Years later, I discovered that some of the happiest people I knew were joyfully performing chores. But these acts of service were motivated by a personal commitment to Christ, and thanksgiving for what He has done. As a teenager I observed volunteers who periodically overhauled the landscaping at church. These men worked hard, but talk about joy! There would be singing and laughing, yet some of the things they were doing were very much like my "not fun" Saturday morning chores.

Several of my friends in Seattle take their turn serving meals to the homeless one night a month. This is high priority for them. They share stories about how God, through the Holy Spirit is working in the lives of the homeless and helpless. My friends are thankful that they have an opportunity to share.

Serving takes many forms. Not everyone serves meals to the homeless, or prunes the overgrown shrubs at church. Serving includes those who attend the early Tuesday morning prayer service, or who help the family that is experiencing serious health issues. But if we want to be joyful, we need to show our gratitude for God's blessings through service -- and let the next generation see what we are doing.

Pray that there will be more NBS graduates as leaders of ministries and churches.
