Overcoming Low Self-Esteem Yields Love for God and Others
Written by: Donna Chisam, Operations Consultant, Friends of Nazareth

Loving others as well as loving ourselves reinforces right behaviors.

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
Matthew 22:39

Many years ago, as parents of teenagers, my husband and I attended a multi-week Focus on the Family video conference hosted by Dr. James Dobson. The material presented was based upon Dr. Dobson's book Focus on the Family which became the launchpad for his successful ministry by the same name.

While I don't remember all of the details from the conference, I do remember him speaking as a psychologist to the fact that ALL teens go through a period of low self esteem. For some he explained it is a seasonal period; but, for others it becomes a life long struggle.

In Matthew 22: 35-36 the Lord, Jesus, was quizzed by a lawyer who was trying to trick him. The lawyer asked Him: "Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?" Jesus answered him. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all they soul, and with all thy mind."

The lawyer did not ask Jesus about a second commandment, he only asked for the greatest, or number one, commandment. But, Jesus continued his dialogue with the lawyer and gave him more information than he requested. Jesus said, "And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Jesus co-joined the two is not possible without the other.

Among the NBS student body, as well as among our readership, there are many that face self-esteem issues. These issues inhibit one's ability to love her or his neighbor as well as one's ability to love God with all of one's heart, soul and mind. Victory is yours! God tells us in Genesis 1:27 that we are created in His image. There is no need for a believer to succumb to the power of defeat - low self-esteem. 1 John 4:4 reminds the believer "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world."

Pray for peace and love between the students, now and in the future.
