We are to Perform our Work with Excellence

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

As Paul writes in I Corinthians 10, he addresses some significant conflict within the Corinthian church. He is struggling to change the mindset of these early followers of Jesus in Corinth. He wants them to stop the completion of mindless religious behavior and to start living all of life loving and serving God and others. We can certainly identify with the Corinthian believers as they were good at the religious activity yet struggled to live for Christ daily in a non-believing world.

It is often easy for us to believe that God is only concerned about certain aspects of our life so we would not need to worry about His involvement in the daily grind. We certainly know God cares about our Sunday church activity and the times when we are studying the Scriptures or in prayer. The Bible teaches us we exist for purposes way more substantial that we think. In I Corinthians 10:31, through one brief sentence, Paul reveals to us that all of life is to be lived for God's purposes. Every day brings us an opportunity to surrender to God's purposes, and Paul challenges us to surrender every part of life to God. In Colossians 1, Paul affirms this again as he explains the deity of Christ when he says in verse 16, "all things were created by Him and for Him." Every person, every day, and every opportunity exists for Him.

When I begin to live each day, approach each interaction and task, and relate to people, as through everything is for the purposes of God, I will probably live differently than I did before. I would work with greater excellence. I would be more attentive to the needs of students. I would be more prepared when I teach. I would approach each day with anticipation of God's purpose for that day. So, no matter what I do today, I do it all for the glory of God.
