Value: We are to choose our words wisely.

Reference:

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Colossians 4:6

Reflection:

As followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must choose our words wisely when speaking with all people, whether believers or non-believers. It is important to mirror the love and grace of the One who showed us - with His own life here on Earth - how to treat all people with dignity and worth, no matter their station in life. Our conversation should be carefully controlled, and the words we use should reflect wisdom and grace-words that are complementary, kind, gentle, and loving.

Speaking the truth in love... (Ephesians 4:15) is God's standard for His children. Again, the Apostle Paul has penned these words in Ephesians 4:29: "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear." Speech that contains love, wisdom, and grace can only come from within-from a heart that has been transformed by God's Holy Spirit. For it is from the heart that our mouth speaks. (Colossians 3:16)

I remember a verse in a song we sang as children: "Be careful little mouth what you say (2x), For the Father up above is looking down with love... So be careful little mouth what you say."

The words we use should not only be gracious, but also have a positive effect upon the hearer. "Seasoned with salt..." does not mean to use hurtful words - such as rubbing salt in a wound - but it means to add flavor to our speech. Let our words be uplifting, delightful, and pleasant; not stinging, sarcastic, or humiliating.

Finally, the life we live and the speech we use should be in harmony with each other. They should reflect the hope we have in the Lord we serve. Our life and conversation should be seen by all people as a living testimony to the Lord and Savior we follow...Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Son of the Living God.

Prayer:

Please pray that the students will always remember the love of Jesus for them.
